Dr. Yisrael Peled, founder of Maccabim, passed away Wednesday night. He was 95 years old. He passed away in his home in Modiin-Maccabim-Reut, leaving behind his wife, Chaya and five children. Peled was the second Mayor of Ramat Gan for 14 years. He also served as chairman of Maccabi Olami, was a founder of Kfar Maccabiah and head of the management of Kfar Maccabiah. He was instrumental in establishing the yishuv, Maccabim during the 1980’s. Peled’s vision was that the Maccabees should return to the “land of the Maccabees” so from the early 80s to mid- 90s he was involved in the establishment of the community. Peled was part of the first group of 120 families to move to the yishuv. Although most were young families, Peled, who was about 60 came to live in the community he founded. He used to tell the children of the yishuv the story of its establishment first hand.
Mayor Haim Bibas, eulogized Yisrael: "Yisrael was a true pioneer who led the building of Maccabim from nothing. I knew and admired Yisrael from the early years of the city of Modiin. Peled laid the foundations and values that are part of the city of Modiin-Maccabim-Reut: a pluralistic city that combines quality of life alongside nature. On behalf of residents of the city of Modiin-Maccabim-Re'ut, I send condolences to Chaya, his wife and his five precious children. May his memory be a blessing".
The funeral will take place Friday, July 15 at 10:00 at the Modiin cemetery.
