A 90-millimeter mortar shell was found at Titora Hill in the city on Monday. The police were called, and a police sapper blew the shell up after the area was closed off. It became clear that the shell was intact that could have exploded with the slightest contact.
Following the incident, Superintendent Yoram Brina said that the area where Modiin Maccabim Reut now stands served as an IDF and border guard training ground until the 1980's, when they practiced with many different weapons. "We encounter fallen shells near the houses from time to time," he said. "These shells could explode and cause serious injury or worse. If an adult or child resident therefore discovers a shell, especially in the open areas, he must alert the police immediately. They will close off the area as is needed, and the shell will be dealt with by a certified sapper."
