The Ministry of Education’s Book Lending Program (השאלת ספרים) is being expanded next year, with all the city’s elementary schools participating as well as most of the high schools. The program is designed to ease the financial burden on parents by reducing the expenditure on school books. In addition, it is a social-community program that provides an opportunity to instill values of equality, preservation of property and the environment, and development of personal responsibility.
The Knesset approved the fees for the book lending program for the 2017-18 school year: 280 NIS for students in elementary school and middle school, and up to 320 NIS for high school students. The savings of the program are 500 NIS per student, on average.
As part of the program, schools around the city collect the used books at the end of the year from the students and check that they can still be used. Books in good condition are put away to be passed on to the younger students and books that are not usable are put in recycling. In all the schools in the city there is someone who works with the book suppliers in order to purchase books in a concentrated manner. At the end of the process, each student receives a package that includes all the books he needs throughout the school year.
