"Wet" Garbage Collection

Over the summer the city of Modiin will be increasing the collection of "wet" garbage. Wet garbage includes biodegradable materials such as food leftovers. From this week through the end of October, wet garbage will be collected twice a week.
The collections are as follows:
Sunday and Wednesday: Avnei Chen and western part of Meginim neighborhoods
Monday and Thursday: Neviim and eastern part of Meginim neighborhoods
Tuesday and Friday: Prachim and Nechalim neighborhoods

Chen Teneh, head of the environmental division in the Iriyah, says that about 30 tons of wet garbage are collected weekly from Modiin. The garbage is recycled as compost, instead of being buried like usual trash. This is important environmentally, helps reduce carbon impact, save space, and avoid soil and groundwater contamination.

Nechalim is the newest neighborhood involved in the initiative. Many volunteers help the cause, and the local Modiin schools also do their part by explaining the process to the students, and helping with publicity.
